Construction schedule set for new library

The new library on the Monroe Park Campus is inching closer to reality. Here is the preliminary construction timeline. 

In progress now

  • New service desk under construction 
  • Consolidation of Innovative Media workspaces on the Third Floor
  • “Big Shift” continues
  • Compact shelving in 500 Academic Centre installed

March to May

  • Move major utilities from back loading dock area
  • Construct new electrical room in NW corner of First floor
  • Construct temporary entrance and cut over to new entrance during spring break
  • Construct temporary loading dock and cut over to new loading dock during spring break or summer
  • Construct new offices on First and Third floors and move staff into temp/"swing" space
  • Construct Special Collections and Archives Stacks on Fourth Floor
  • Major impact for students: Loss of some study space on First, Third and Fourth floors and construction noise

May to August

  • Remove pre-cast panels on exterior
  • Staff move to swing space and new offices
  • Demolish atrium entrance and service desk
  • Construct temporary fire egress from north and east stairwells
  • Close off east stairwell from First to ground
  • Demolish Third floor classrooms
  • Demolish loading dock
  • Begin restroom construction on floors two-four
  • Renovate current Special Collections and Archives space
  • –Move reading room to Mapp Room
  • –Cabell Room sealed off
  • –Move SCA staff to swing space
  • Main impact: Loss of graduate student reading room and noise
  • Indirect path to HelpIT desk

August-September, 2015

  • Construct new building
  • Re-surface plinth
  • Renovate First and construct Second, Third and Fourth floor restrooms
  • Complete Fourth floor Special Collections and Archives renovations
  • Construct openings between old and new buildings
  •   - Remaining staff on First floor north move
  •   - Reconfigure Room 230 workspace to accommodate lost space
  • Renovate NE corners of Third and Fourth floors
  • Restore graduate student reading room
  • Temporary loss of  First floor restroom and NOISE
  • New restrooms on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors
  • Open new building and use new entrance
