VCU Libraries 2012 Black History Month Lecture

Tom Burrell is the founder of the Burrell Communications Group, the nation's largest marketing firm owned by African Americans. Burrell has dedicated his life to positive advertising for the African American community and to challenging stereotypes and other harmful images of African Americans in the media. His socially progressive ideas have won successful, long-term advertising contracts with numerous companies, including Coca Cola, McDonalds, Procter & Gamble and Verizon. He is the author of the book "Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority" in which he explores possibilities for leading African Americans to more equal, economically successful, and satisfying lifestyles.
