VCU Health Literacy Special Interest Group to meet June 5

The VCU Health Literacy Special Interest Group will meet Thursday, June 5 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 pm in the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences 1st Floor Conference Room, directly behind Skull & Beans. All who are interested are welcome to attend and also to join the special interest group which meets about three times a year. VCU Libraries Closed Monday, May 26, 2008

Both James Branch Cabell Library and Tompkins-McCaw Library are closed for the Memorial Day Holiday, Monday, May 26, 2008. A complete schedule of hours available online.

Coming Soon: New Study Space in Cabell Library

In June, Cabell Library will add 8 new study tables and 32 seats on the first floor. These new furnishings are designed to provide students and faculty with additional work space for laptop computing, use of the Libraries' print collections and general study. The new space is along the Cathedral Place wall and features natural light and an attractive view. The additional floor space is the result of a consolidation of the Current Periodicals collection and the removal of shelving.

Periodicals Price Survey 2008

The annual survey of periodical prices has been published in Library Journal. The survey found that prices of subscription-based journals increased nine to ten percent for 2008 and similar increases can be expected for 2009. In the related commentary, Lee Van Orsdel and Kathleen Born highlight the events of the past year that have impacted journal publishing.

NPR's Science Friday interviews Harold Varmus

Ira Flatow of NPR's "Science Friday" talked with former NIH director Harold Varmus, a leading proponent of open access to research and one of the founders of the Public Library of Science, an open-access scientific journal. The original broadcast was Friday, April 11, 2008.

NIH Updates its Public Access Policy FAQ

Significant revisions were made to the NIH Public Access Policy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on May 2, 2008. The revisions were intended to provide additional clarity on the compliance process and do not point to any changes in the policy itself. Among the changes are clarification about the PMCID number and who should submit the paper in the event of multiple authors. For a list of the new changes and revisions, consult the information provided by SPARC.

Community Health Education Center Open House

In recognition of the VCUHS’ Week of the Nurse celebration, the Community Health Education Center (CHEC) will hold an open house on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. All nurses and nursing students are invited to visit CHEC, located on the ground floor of the VCUHS Gateway Building, 1200 East Marshall Street. Stop by to meet the staff and to learn more about CHEC. Light refreshments and door prizes will be available. Sponsored by the VCU Libraries, the VCU Health System, and the MCVH Auxiliary of VCUHS.

CINAHL® Plus with Full Text Expands Access to Nursing and Allied Health Research Literature

VCU Libraries announces the addition of CINAHL Plus with Full Text to its collection of databases. CINAHL Plus is the enhanced online edition of CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. With full text coverage of more than 620 journals, CINAHL Plus provides a multidisciplinary approach to the literature of nursing and allied health fields such as dental hygiene, medical laboratory technology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and many others. The database contains 600,000 full text articles as well as citations to articles dating back to 1937, searchable cited references, legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials. It also indexes publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association. New in this version of CINAHL are Evidence-Based Care Sheets, Quick Lessons (summaries of diseases and conditions) and over 200 full text books. Search results from CINAHL Plus can be directly exported to RefWorks. A list of titles covered along with information about full text is available from EBSCO Publishing.
