Bedpan Elegance: Celebrating the Beauty of an Everyday Object

GreenRelaxWeb.jpgThe VCU Friends of the Library present the exhibit "Bedpan Elegance: Celebrating the Beauty of an Everyday Object," running March 31 through June 30, 2011, at Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, 509 N. 12th Street, on VCU's MCV Campus. An opening reception and gallery talk will take place on March 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room at Tompkins-McCaw Library.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a series of thirty photographs of bedpans and other elimination vessels by William W. DuBois, professor and chair of Visual Media at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Since 1978, Professor DuBois has amassed a private collection of more than sixty bedpans in a variety of durable materials such as enamelware and ceramic, documenting a period of medical history before the revolution of disposable plastics. He has combined his collection with his passion for photography, resulting in these one-of-a-kind images of bedpan elegance. In addition to the photographs, the exhibit includes bedpans and similar vessels that are part of the medical artifacts collection of the Tompkins-McCaw Library. "Bedpan Elegance" is the inaugural exhibit in Tompkins-McCaw Library's recently renovated gallery.

The opening reception, gallery talk and exhibit are free and open to the public. For special accommodations, please contact Thelma Mack at (804) 828-0017.

Davi Det Hompson art on display

Davi Det Hompson Exhibit.jpg

In the exhibit area on the fourth floor of James Branch Cabell Library, a new exhibit is on display, focusing on the work of Richmond-based visual artist Davi Det Hompson. Davi Det Hompson was the pen name for David E. Thompson (1939-1996), best known for creating mail art, book art and text-based paintings inspired by the Dada and Fluxus movements. Beginning in the 1970s, he taught in the School of the Arts at VCU. In 1978, he was one of the founders of 1708 East Main Street Gallery. Thompson also made major contributions to Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library. Not only did he serve on a committee to establish the Book Arts Collection in 1979; he donated an assortment of book art, mail art, and archival materials. This exhibit showcases selections of his own work and examples of mail art that he received from nationally renowned artists.

designinform is a new online resource for researching the history of modern design and the applied arts. It contains three separate design databases on one platform: Design Abstracts Retrospective, Design ProFILES, and ReVIEW.

Design Abstracts Retrospective (DAR) is an abstracting and indexing service that covers many of the most important design and applied arts journals and annuals published during the twentieth century. DAR covers articles on all aspects of design, from architecture to embroidery.

Design ProFILES (DP) is a biographical dictionary of modern designers, craftspeople, artists, and architects. It includes profiles of every single designer, architect, craftsperson, studio, workshop, etc., whose work is discussed or illustrated in the journals and yearbooks covered by DAR.

ReVIEW contains full-text nineteenth and early twentieth century art journals. ReVIEW aims to digitize many of the most important decorative and fine arts journals published in Europe and the USA during this period.
