Researchers can analyze historical events, and their presentation over time, through commercial and governmental newsreels, archival footage, public affairs footage, and important documentaries.

Classical Scores Library

Classical Scores Library makes accessible the most important classical scores and manuscripts, allowing for the study and analysis of more than 25,000 scores. The collection includes works spanning time periods from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Coverage of score types is comprehensive, with full scores, study scores, piano and vocal scores, and piano reductions.

Classical Music Reference Library

Thumbnail image for AlexStreetClassicalMusicRef.jpgClassical Music Reference Library offers comprehensive coverage of all classical genres, spanning music from the Medieval period to the 21st century, including definitions of musical terms and biographical information on the major classical composers and artists. Included are the authoritative reference titles Baker's dictionary of music, Baker's biographical dictionary of musicians, and Baker's student encyclopedia of music, which are available for the first time in electronic form.

African American Music Reference

AfricanAmMusic.jpgAfrican American Music Reference offers the first comprehensive coverage of blues, jazz, spirituals, civil rights songs, slave songs, minstrelsy, rhythm and blues, gospel, and other forms of black American musical expression. Researchers can explore biographies, chronologies, sheet music, images, lyrics, liner notes, and discographies, chronicling the diverse history and culture of the African American experience through music.

Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online

The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online is the first comprehensive online resource devoted to music research of all the world's cultures. More than 9,000 pages of material, combined with entries by more than 700 international expert contributors, make this the most complete body of work focused on world music. Articles include detailed photographs that show musicians, musical instruments, and the cultural context of dances, rituals, and ceremonies.

Rams memorabilia on display

Rams Memorabilia 1.jpgSpecial Collections & Archives at James Branch Cabell Library is displaying Rams memorabilia in the exhibit area on the fourth floor. Among the memorabilia are photographs, flyers, and pennants from decades past, documenting both the history of the Rams and the evolution of their image. Also among the memorabilia are items celebrating the success of the Rams in the 2011 NCAA Basketball Championship.

Special Collection & Archives is accepting donations of Rams memorabilia from the recent championship. Items such as tickets, flyers, posters, t-shirts, pennants, cheer gear, and photographs, almost anything that will help document the season, are particularly desired. If you have items that you would be interested in donating, please bring them to Special Collections & Archives on the fourth floor of James Branch Cabell Library from Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. For questions or suggestions, please contact Special Collection & Archives at (804) 828-1108.

New book art on display

Travel-themed book art by Linda K. Johnson.jpgIn the exhibit area on the fourth floor of James Branch Cabell Library, two new exhibits of book art are on display. The first focuses on pieces from the Women's Studio Workshop, the nation's largest publisher of hand-printed, hand-bound books. Founded in 1974, the Workshop has published nearly 200 volumes. Special Collections & Archives at James Branch Cabell Library is a repository for the Workshop and has over 170 volumes from its collection. The second exhibit is of travel-themed pieces and includes the work of Linda K. Johnson, a graduate of VCU's MFA in Visual Communication program.
