Welcome Back.pngWell summer it seems has come to a close and now it is back to class, clinical rotations, papers, projects and whatever else may come along.  Regardless of what may happen, if there is some way I or anyone else here at the library come help please do not hesitate to ask.  While the campus slowed down, there has been a lot going on at the library.  Below you can read what some of those things are as well as what is going on at the library in the coming weeks that may be of some interest to you.   Hope you had a great summer and I am sure I will see you around as I am seemingly always over at the School of Nursing for one thing or another.

Office Hours at the School of Nursing - In Break Room
Clock Face.jpg
This semester I am going to try to make myself as available as possible in order to help as projects and papers come up.  To increase my availability, I plan on at least being  at the SON in the break room on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am - 9:30 am, unless there is something I need to attend to that makes it imperative that I head to the library.  I may be there at other times and on Wednesdays & Fridays but that is largely dependent on what I have on my schedule that day.  Please don't hesitate to say hello if you see me and feel free to ask me any questions you may have.  If those times don't work for you, shoot me an email (rebrown2@vcu.edu).

Construction/Renovations at TML - 2nd Floor:

Well if you have not been around much this summer, or classes and rotations have kept you busy  you have missed all of the construction going on at the library.  After completing the multimedia collaboration room this spring, the next area of the library that has been tackled has been the second floor which is  finished and n the next couple of weeks the new furniture will arrive and be put in place.   In the meantime there is other furniture which has been set up so that you can use the space.   I think you will be pleasantly surprised and find the space one that will be great for studying.  Below you can see some pictures of all that has been done and as you can see it is quite a change.

RN.jpgVCU Libraries School of Nursing Library Orientation Resource

Another new resource I have developed and placed on the front page of the nursing research guide is a power point that has links, instructions and screen shots that will answer many questions you may have as you learn to use the library resources and services.  For those of you who have been here awhile, you may also find it useful too so you may want to check it out. Over the next couple of months there will be changes made to the resource as I add videos and add sections.  Any time I add something I will put a date beside the link to let you that it is a new version.  If you should see anything wrong with the resource or feel I should add something specific, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Here is a link to the orientation resource, you just need to hit download -  click here

spring.pngWell spring has arrived and with it warmer temperatures and the advent of allergy season for some :).   While it is nice outside and the semester is quickly coming to an end, there are also papers to be written and assignments to be completed.  To that end, there are many classes and resources here at the library to help.  Since my last monthly entry, things here at the library are staying busy and I just wanted to call your attention to a couple of items that may be of interest to you.

TechnologyComputer.jpgThe 2012 VCU Technology Fair is quickly coming up on the calendar.   It is an event that is co-sponsored by VCU Technology Services and the VCU Libraries.  The intent of the fair is to bring the latest in technology developments for the classroom, office and research to VCU.   One great enticement to come is that a new IPad will be given away each day along with the chance to be entered to a win a Dell Laptop based for attending the various workshops that will be held.

February.pngWell February has arrived and just as things are picking up around campus as the heart of the semester quickly arrives, things at the library are also getting a bit busier as there are all sorts of things going on.  Keep in mind that if you should need any help with research, assignments that myself and the other librarians are here to help.   Some things that have changed or are coming up since my last entry are below.

______________________________________________________________________________

Improvements to the VCU Nursing Research Guide

bookresearch.jpgIn an effort to insure that the nursing research guide is as useful as possible, over the break I reviewed the guide and tried to determine how to improve the layout in order to make it more useful and to provide more content/resources that would be useful.   In my efforts to improve the guide I used the ICIRN Essential Nursing Resources, 26th Edition. By using this resource, as well as feedback from users, I hope that you will find the guide to be more useful and utilize it more.   If you ever have any suggestions as to how the guide could be improved or something you need from me in order to help you, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Some of the Improvements made to the guide include:

Clinical Rotation Resources - on the front page I have included some resources that should help when performing pre-assessments during clinical rotations.   These resources include drug monographs and information on drug interactions. There is also information on interventions, diseases and conditions.

Statistics - there is a new tab at the top of the page that is really a consolidation of the previous two tabs that addressed this topic.  This section should enable you to find statistics on various diseases, their prevalence in the population, as well as other health related data.

Grants - this tab provides information on grant resources that could help fund research projects.   There is also information on VCU resources that are in place to help support research.

Video - this tab now contains links to the New England Journal of Medicine Clinical Videos as well links to Lippincott's Nursing Health Assessment Video Series and Counseling and Therapy in Video, which are two video series that the library has that can be streamed over the internet.  In order to access any of these videos you will have to log in with your eID and password.

Misc. Tab - this tab is composed of information related to informatics, consumer health information resources, as well as a links to useful blogs/discussion boards that could be useful in keeping up with issues and developments in the field of nursing.

Well November is here and while the semester is quickly approaching its end, there is plenty going on here at the library.   I know it is also a time that can be quite stressful as there is research to be done for papers on top of studying for tests.   Remember that myself and the other librarians here at TML are here to help.   Just remember that it is best to make an appointment to insure that myself or one of my colleagues has plenty of time to help.

Yanchick Watercolors Exhibit.jpg

Art and science mix for painter and scholar Victor A. Yanchick, dean of the VCU School of Pharmacy. His paintings will be on display during the fall semester, Aug. 15 through Nov. 23, at Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, 509 N. 12th St. A free-and-open-to-the-public reception will be held Aug. 17 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Watercolor is the pharmacy educator's medium of choice, and work on display includes landscapes, pastoral scenes, still lifes and themes from the American Southwest. He started painting 11 years ago. A self-described lifelong learner, he said, "I wanted to do something totally different from what I do on a day-to-day basis. Painting is a way of expressing one's self."

Yanchick, who has served as dean of the School of Pharmacy since 1996, has been a leader on the national level as president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He studied pharmacy at the University of Iowa and received his Ph.D. in pharmacy from Purdue University. His wide-ranging interests in the pharmacy profession have included medication use in the elderly and interprofessional education. He has guided several programs through a time of rapid change with a personal commitment to improve patient care outcomes through advances and innovation in pharmacy education.

Yanchick donates his watercolors to help raise funds for student scholarships and philanthropic organizations.

For special accommodations, please contact Thelma Mack at (804) 828-0017 or mackta@vcu.edu.
