First Floor Cabell Library Furniture Has Arrived

New furniture for Cabell Library's first floor arrived on May 15 and was assembled and installed the following day. The additions include an array of options for library patrons seeking study havens: tables and chairs for groups of twos, threes or fours; sofas and love seats; soft chairs with tablet arms for laptop use or writing; computer task chairs and group study room furnishings.

The third floor and most of the second floor have been cleared for the deliveries to those locations, which begin Wednesday, May 23rd. If you usually study in these areas you will find plenty of seating on the first floor, in the second floor group study zone and on the fourth floor. We appreciate your patience while we get our new furnishings in place.

Furniture Delivery Update, April 30, 2007

Delivery schedules have been finalized for the new Cabell Library study furniture. At the end of spring semester final exams, furniture will begin to be replaced.

-May 11-14: Older furniture begins to be relocated or sent to surplus. Selected public computers will be temporarily stored until installation is completed.

-May 15-18: Delivery and set-up of first floor furniture.

-May 21-25: Delivery and set-up of second and third floor furniture.

Please bear with us as the furniture delivery takes place. Because it is such a large amount of furniture, the elevators will be heavily used both in moving the old furniture out and the new furniture in. Public computers and other equipment will need to be temporarily moved out of harms way, but will be put back in place as soon as it is safe to do so. Library staff will be working with Disability Services to alert them to brief periods when our public accessible computers and assistive technology rooms will be impacted. Appropriate signage will be posted within the library alerting patrons to the various delivery activities.

By June, Cabell Library will be a much improved place to study with a new and spruced up look, ready for summer term researchers and students. Combined with the completion of the fourth floor renovation in July, the upgraded library environment will help welcome new and returning students this fall.

Additional Cabell Library Furniture Upgrades Coming

Thanks to additional special funding from the Provost's Office, Cabell Library will be upgrading a great deal of study furniture this spring. In all, over 150 seats will be added, and in furnishing types and configurations that will be better utilized.

Components:

  • First Floor: Worn furnishings in this busiest portion of the building will be replaced, including computer task chairs and remaining original Cabell furniture. In addition, new seats will be added in the form of soft seating, round and rectangular study tables, and cafe style tables.
  • Second Floor: The main corridor, Cathedral-side quiet zone, and Floyd-side original study furniture will all be replaced, along with addition of new computer carrels.
  • Third Floor: Original Cabell furniture and older computer carrels will be replaced with new study tables, study carrels, computer carrels, and soft seating.

In all purchasing choices the philosophy is to extend the design concepts identified during the first floor renovation several years ago by adding furniture that can ultimately be placed anywhere in the building as needs call for relocation over time. In addition, furniture choices include types that will be more efficiently used: smaller tables and soft seats that can be fit into larger or smaller locations, and chair and table types that ensure flexible options for both individuals and groups.

New Furniture on the First Floor of Cabell

New furniture will be purchased for the first floor of Cabell Library thanks to special funding from the Provost's Office. Over fifty seats will be added to the library's active entry floor, while worn and outdated furnishings that remain are updated. Items to be purchased include: study and cafe-style tables and seating; upholstered loveseats and lounge chairs, some with tablet arm work surfaces; coffee tables; rolling task chairs for use at computer carrels; rocking chairs; adjustable height tables for use with the Libraries' assistive technology; and equipment furniture for the Print/Photocopy area.

Goals of the project are to:
- add badly needed seats in a high-use area of the building
- replace outdated and worn furniture
- ensure more efficient use of seats by offering more individual and cafe-table style seating
- allow for more flexible furniture placement near outlets and network drops for laptop users
- make use of nooks and crannies on the floor that permit an individual "comfy" chair
- maximize window areas with seating that provides reflective space for study or contemplation

Furniture will be received and installed by the end of the fiscal year and will provide new options for library users beginning summer of 2007.
