February 2012 Archives

Welcome

Follow-up from Previous Meeting
  • Renovation - The second floor renovation plans have been funded.  The library will hopefully start this renovation this summer and end in the fall.
  • STF Funding - The March meeting will concentrate on the approval of materials for the STF funds.  Please review the blog post and post any suggestions for technology you find to be appropriate additions to TML prior to the next meeting.
  • New Exhibit on First Floor - A new exhibition will start in March featuring art from the Science and Medical Preparatory Emphasis Area of the Department of Communication Arts.
  • Quick Search - A committee member was having some difficulties with the new Quick Search.  If you have issues, please report it through the feedback form for Quick Search.
Open Discussion
  • Facebook - A suggestion was made to create a Facebook group for the TMLGAC members to assist in remembering meeting dates and topics.  Emily will be creating this group and using these last two meetings as a trial for how it can be utilized for TMLGAC.
  • Interlibrary Loan Services - There has been some confusion regarding charges applied to materials from Interlibrary loan.  To clarify, if you order a material that VCU Libraries does have in our collection (in-print or electronic), we will assess a $5 dollar fee.  If VCU Libraries does not own the material, you will not be assess the fee.  We will see if the form can be altered to make the fee more clear.  *A reminder to students out of the greater Richmond Metro area for rotations - Change your address to your current location to receive enhanced services.*
  • Feedback forms - The library has a feedback box located at service desk with blank slips of paper to submit any feedback on the library.  Other forms to receive feedback were suggested: Online forms, Service Desk Questionnaires, Flip Charts, etc.  We will start posting a flip chart at the door again and you are welcome to submit questions to ask your peers.  We have the Library Suggestion Blog available to report suggestions to the library as well.  We will also talk about LibQual, another form of assessment the library has done with members of the VCU community at a subsequent meeting.
  • Library Environment - Many of you have commented on the environment in TML and how during some hours it can feel unwelcoming to students because of the noise and lack of seating.  The staff at TML will try to keep the noise level down and are willing to direct students to other areas of the library.

Follow-Up from previous meeting

Signage - Signage indicating cell phone use has been distributed throughout the library.  It is especially prevalent in the silent study areas in TML.

Renovation Updates - The Multimedia Collaboration Room space in the basement will start construction in February.  This renovation is supposed to continue for six weeks, hopefully completed mid-March.

Extended Hours Pilot Numbers - The number of people who used the library during the extended hours period nearly doubled from the previous year during the same time.  Due to these numbers, we will continue extended hours during finals in the spring.

Open Discussion

STF Funds - Our guest, Shannon Jones, introduced how the library uses Student Technology Funds to enhance the technology at the library.  Previous funds has helped the library update computers, purchase digital media equipment and enhance collaborative spaces.  Some suggestions submitted were presentation recording systems, more electrical outlet extensions, and Apple desktop computers.  Please continue to think about technology which could enhance your experience here at the library.  Either submitted to the blog or email Emily.

Quick Search - Our second guest, Erin White, demonstrated the features of the VCU Libraries new search tool Quick Search.  This is tool which can be used to find books, journals, articles, etc from one source.  Feedback on this tool has been positive but librarians caution that this tool is not as precise as a subject specific database like PubMed or LexisNexis.  This can be a great place to start your research to see what materials are available.

TML Website - Erin brought a card sort activity to organize the links available on the TML Website.  Participants organized the links into categories and labeled that category with what they thought was a recognizable label.  Please see the attached image.  Another activity involved marking up the TML Website with hearts, x's, and question marks.  This will help in future redesign projects to allow the designers know what is important to students when using the TML Website.

Request for More Feedback - Emily has been accepted to present a poster on the creation and initiation of the Tompkins-McCaw Library Graduate Student Advisory Committee at the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting.  She will be soliciting more feedback from you to create this poster and improve programming for TMLGAC.
