TML News and Notes: October 2009

PubMed Redesign is official

After a false start, it looks like the redesigned PubMed is up and running. Tompkins-McCaw Library is offering classes to show you where things have moved, but if you can't make it to a class, there are some online tools from other sources that will help.

There are a couple of articles in the NLM Technical Bulletin explaining the changes:
PubMed Redesign
PubMed Now Using the Redesigned Interface

Also from NLM
The PubMed Basics trifold brochure (pdf link)
All the tutorials have been updated on the PubMed Online Training page

University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries created a comparison chart

There is a 3 minute YouTube video (except use the VCU Libraries page to get to PubMed)

As always, we will be happy to answer questions and arrange for large and small training sessions.

Finding Study Space at Tompkins-McCaw Library - More Than Meets the Eye

The 1st floor of TML is usually filled with students collaborating and using computers. It is a popular place for group discussions over lunch. But there are more study areas and more computers throughout the Library.

Up on the 2nd floor of TML you'll find some tables for quiet study, plus there are 8 computers, and in the front corner of the building, next to the Library Instruction Classroom, there is a Quiet Study Room (Rm 2-001).

From the 2nd floor you can also get to our Group Study Rooms - rooms with whiteboards, internet access, and some with DVD/VCRs, anatomical models, or plasma monitors for presentation practice. Check our web site for room details.

In the Basement there are another 10 computers as well as some study carrels and the Multimedia Collaboration Room (turn left when you leave the stairs or elevator and you'll see the sign - Rm B-037). There are self-service multimedia computers as well as group study seating. See our web site for multimedia software details. A soda machine is also in the Library Basement.

Find out more about our Group Study Rooms and Multimedia Collaboration Room, or take a look at a Library map at the TML web site.

Additional study space and computers are available in Hunton Student Center.

MCVC Fall Documentary Series

Tompkins-McCaw Library and University Student Commons and Activities Programs will be screening two more films for the MCVC Fall Documentary Film Series.

Babyland will be shown Tuesday, November 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Hunton Student Center's Learning Center. The broadcast follows an unusual relationship between a black teenage mother-to-be and a white volunteer from a suburban church whose goal is to ensure that the baby is born healthy. The surprising bond between the inner city mother and her suburban mentor becomes the emotional center of the documentary. Their journey together through pregnancy and birth and the twists and turns that follow is an intense story that cuts through issues of race and class. The women learn about each other and themselves. For more information and to register, visit http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/training/course_detail.asp?ID=7181.

Secrets of the Mind will be shown Friday, December 4 from noon to 1 p.m. in Hunton Student Center's Learning Center. The film follows neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran as he investigates four mysterious psychological cases involving blindness and sight, phantom limbs and pain, and delusional thinking; and delivers his astounding conclusions. TML Library Liaisons: Meet Alan T. Williams

AlanTW.JPG

Hello VCU'ers (if that's a real word)!!! My name is Alan T. Williams and I am one of the Education Services Librarians at the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, VCU Libraries. I have worked for VCU Libraries in one capacity or another going on 10 years. I am the liaison librarian for the VCU School of Nursing (I love you guys!) and several schools within the VCU School of Allied Health Professions (Go OT!).

My main research interests are open source, free programs that can be used in instruction. I have recently completed a project on the top free screencasting software and I am now looking into free bibliographic software. I am also very intrigued by mobile technologies and how they can be used for instruction.

I am here to teach library instruction for classes as well as one on one appointments to help students gain a better understanding of the valuable resources we have at VCU Libraries. Please feel free to e-mail me (s2atwill@vcu.edu) or call me (804.828.1592) if I can be of assistance. Thank you.
