McGuire Hall is 100 Years Old Today

McGuireHall-Engraving.jpg

One hundred years ago today Richmonders and medical students participated in the formal opening of a new academic building for the University College of Medicine (UCM) located at the corner of 12th and Clay Streets. The red brick building trimmed in Indiana limestone was described as a "model of completeness ... with every new facility for the most modern methods of medical instruction." The institution's original building, the old Bruce-Lancaster House, was destroyed by fire in January of 1910. Friends of UCM rallied around the medical school and raised $100,000 towards the cost of the new building and its equipment. The college enjoyed its new facility for just one academic term. At the close of the 1913 session UCM was merged with the Medical College of Virginia to form one stronger medical school for Richmond. The new building became the property of MCV and subsequently was named "McGuire Hall" in honor of UCM founder, Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire.

Reminders of the building's former affiliation can be seen on the transom over the front doors and the tile in floor of the entry.

PubMed Search Class Covers NEW Limits

Join us in the Tompkins-McCaw Library Instruction Classroom (2-012) at 11 am on Tuesday May 15 for a PubMed searching class.  As well as the basics about searching, using MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), and setting up a MyNCBI account, we will cover the new Limits side bar.  Learn how to add, change, and remove Limits with the new sidebar so you can refine your search to get the articles you need.

PubMed Limits Now A Sidebar on Results Page

Well if you have been using PubMed and are used to the limits being located on their own separate page, when you log in this morning you will find a difference that should make things a bit easier.   Limits are now located on a sidebar which you will see to the left of your results when you are doing your search.

Searching for EBM Articles in PubMed

There are many point-of-care tools that present some evidence from the literature, for instance VCU Libraries provides access to FirstConsult and Up-to-Date, but these resources don't cover every condition, not every entry has evidence, and not every entry is current, so it is important to know how to find evidence in the biomedical literature.

The VCU Libraries Evidence Based Medicine Research Guide has links to many sources of information on EBM.  Now there is a section on specific ways to search PubMed to find evidence based articles.  If you haven't used Limits in PubMed, tried Clinical Queries, or set up Filters in myNCBI, you will find some illustrated instructions in the Searching PubMed for Evidence section.
