These difficulties could mean you could experience temporary issues in trying to access NLM databases like PubMed. NLM is continuing to work on this issue and just wanted to pass along this information in case you should experience any problems today as you are doing research. Early in February 2012, the Tompkins-McCaw Library (TML) is
kicking off the renovation of the basement Multimedia Collaboration Room, B-037. The
renovation will take the existing room to bare bones and then add layers to
create an exciting, contemporary space focused on collaborative learning.
Existing furniture and equipment will be removed or relocated February 2-3; demolition begins Monday, February 6. The five week process will transform the room from dated 1970s shabby to 21st century chic.
With the exception of workstations and café booths, furniture in the room is designed to be moveable and configurable by users. There will be mobile soft seating and white boards too. Walls at the end of the room will be finished with whiteboard material. The color scheme of the room is shades of charcoal with pops of fuchsia, green and gold. The design board showing all the exciting changes for B-037 is on display at the TML Service Desk.
Enjoy the pictures of the planned renovation. We'll be posting photos as the project progresses.

Can't open your PubMed or My NCBI account?
As of Friday, VCU and many other universities are experiencing problems with access to PubMed's My NCBI accounts. The problem is related to customized versions of PubMed that provide links to the libraries' online journal articles from PubMed citations. At VCU this problem occurs when accessing VCU Libraries' links to PubMed from off-campus locations - which includes VCUHS - or from a wireless Internet connection.
Until the problem is resolved, consider using the following option to gain access: Search PubMed at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?otool=vculib to gain access to My NCBI. This access point will include Get it@VCU with links to VCU Libraries' online journals.Tompkins-McCaw Library will be closed Saturday, July 2 through Monday, July 4 for the holiday weekend. We will reopen Tuesday, July 5th.
Have a safe & fun 4th!

The American Psychological Association recently announced that it would charge authors $2500 for depositing articles into PubMed Central. But the Association has apparently decided to rethink the new policy. According to APA's website, the policy is "currently being re-examined and will not be implemented at this time."
The Chronicle of Higher Education reported the policy on July 15, 2008 and its blog quickly filled with comments. According to The Chronicle , authors publishing in APA journals were told not to deposit the articles themselves and that the fee would be billed to the author's university.
Authors who receive funding from the National Institutes of Health are now required to submit articles arising from the funded research into PubMed Central, the National Library of Medicine's digital archive. For more information, visit the VCU Libraries' page on Navigating the New NIH Mandatory Public Access Policy.
Wireless printing is available in both James Branch Cabell Library and Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences. Instructions and downloads can be found online.
For additional assistance with this service, ask at the Technology Services Help Desk, 804-828-2227 or via email. The Monroe Park Campus desk is located in Cabell Library's basement, and the Medical College of Virginia desk is located in Sanger Hall's basement.
VCU Libraries Resource Delivery Services will not operate during the VCU Winter Closing from December 21, 2007 through January 2, 2008. The time required to obtain materials from other institutions increases during December and January due to winter breaks, holiday delays and increased end-of-semester workloads. Many libraries do not lend at all from mid-December through early January.
With this in mind please submit interlibrary loan requests by December 10, 2007. Interlibrary loan requests received after December 10, 2007 may not be obtained until January 2008.
For additional information, contact Shirley Thomas at 828-1115.
