Dr. Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada leads the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s efforts to reduce global health inequities by investing in affordable new vaccines, therapies, and diagnostics for diseases that most gravely burden the world’s poor, and by developing new partnerships to shape the future of global public health. In his presentation, Dr. Yamada will speak to his vision of the foundation's current and future role, and more broadly, to the shared priorities and approaches most important to securing major public health successes in the future.

Dr. Claudia Thomas, the first African-American female orthopedic surgeon in the United States and author of "God Spare Life," will speak on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m. in the Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building auditorium, followed by a reception and book-signing. This event is free and open to the public. VCU Libraries Black History Month Lecture: Richmond Women in the Civil Rights Movement

VCU Libraries Black History Month Lecture "Richmond Women in the Civil Rights Movement" is a panel discussion with Civil Rights pioneers Ora Lomax, Elizabeth Johnson Rice, and Hilda Warden. Moderated by Bonnie Winston. This special event will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 starting at 7:30 pm in the University Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballroom on the Monroe Park Campus. Free and open to the public. Parking is available for a fee in the West Main or West Cary Street parking decks. VCU Libraries lecture Grave Robbing, Goblins, and Ghouls to be presented on October 31, 2007

Anatomical instruction has been integral to medical education for centuries. Discover how anatomy was taught in Richmond during the 19th century and why students and faculty were involved in procuring cadavers for this important educational experience. A brief walking tour of the MCV Campus highlighting stories about grave robbing, goblins, and ghouls will follow the presentation. Seating is limited; advanced registration is encouraged. Lecture: Above and Beyond: A Celebration of the Legacy of the Leonard Graduate

A chronicle of the legacies of the graduates of the Leonard Medical School, a former department of Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. In existence from 1882 -1918, this historically black medical school produced over four hundred graduates. The major contributions of these graduates on the City of Richmond, the state of Virginia and various medical organizations will be discussed.

About the Speaker: Elvatrice Parker Belsches MA RPh is an archival researcher, author and pharmacist living in the Richmond area. She is a multiple contributor to Harvard University's upcoming publication, the African American National Biography (Oxford University Press, 2008) and the author of Richmond, Virginia, a Black America Series publication (now in its sixth printing). She is also the February 2007 speaker for the Duke/UNC-Chapel Hill Collaborative Lecture Series on the History of Medicine.
