World Health Day 2012 - "Good Health Adds Life to Years"

Each year, April 7 is designated "World Health Day" by the World Health Organization. This Saturday, World Health Day 2012 will celebrate Ageing and Health with the slogan "Good Health Adds Life to Years."

"[This] campaign activities and materials will focus on how good health
throughout life can help older men and women lead full and productive
lives and be a resource for their families and communities.
Over the past century life expectancy has increased dramatically and the
world will soon have more older people than children. Populations are
ageing everywhere, but less-developed countries are witnessing the
fastest change. This social transformation represents both challenges
and opportunities. In particular, countries may only have a single
generation to prepare their health and social systems for an ageing
world." -- World Health Organization

The campaign also aims to challenge stereotypes with posters featuring older people in positive, healthy situations. Visit the World Health Day 2012 website to download posters, view photos, and find links to articles and additional information on ageing and health.

For additional health information, try the following links:

Seniors' Health -- MedlinePlus
National Institute on Aging -- U.S. National Institutes of Heath
American Geriatrics Society -- AGS
National Council on Aging -- NCOA

September 18th is Take a Loved One for a Checkup Day. It's your chance to encourage those you love to visit a health professional -- or at least make an appointment to visit one. And look for a community-sponsored health event near you on this day. It's a great way to show you care. When your loved ones are connected with the right medical care, they can find out about their health concerns. Certain health problems can be prevented and others can be treated. Please help those you love do something good for their health on September 18. Go with them to visit a health professional or make an appointment to see how they can take care of their health.
