VCU Technology Fair on April 2, 9:00AM - 2:00PM

The VCU Libraries and Technology Services invite the entire MCV Campus to attend the 2009 VCU Technology Fair. This event brings the latest in technology developments for the classroom, research, and mobile computing to VCU. Thinking about purchasing an iPhone, a BlackBerry Curve, or new laptop? Want to learn how others are using emerging technologies to streamline their research, workflow, patient interactions, and educational experience? Then plan to attend the VCU Technology Fair. This event is free and open to the public.

Participating exhibitors include Lenovo, Apple, Blackboard, Microsoft, Echo, Daly Computers, Dell, Cisco, and Microsoft and many more.
• Over 10 items to be raffled including iPod shuffles, Godiva chocolates, and other goodies.

Publishing in Peer-Reviewed Journals - Presenter Handouts

Publishing in peer-reviewed journals can be intimidating and often frustrating. This session is an overview of publishing in peer-reviewed research journals and will focus on how the process works and how to make it work for you. Topics covered included how editors make decisions, tips for improving your chances of a good review and/or publication, writing effective abstracts, tips for dealing with the editorial office, and online and print resources. Complete the workshop evaluation.

Using RSS feeds to Keep Current with Health Sciences Literature

Are you looking for a more efficient way to stay current with health sciences literature? Do you want to monitor content from your favorite journals, databases, newspapers, or blogs without having to constantly visit their websites to see what's new? If you answered yes to these questions, then plan to attend this workshop.

This hands-on workshop will introduce attendees to using RSS feeds to monitor newly published and frequently updated information. Attendees will receive assistance with registering for a Google Reader account in addition to subscribing to feeds from journals such as the JAMA, Nature, and Science; articles from newsletters like the NIH Research Matters, and updated search results from database such as PubMed, CINHAL, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. Seating for this session is limited.

Instructional Media Workshops

Learn what is available for use in the Instructional Media Workshop, a Self service facility in Tompkins-McCaw Library for creating media presentation materials. The IMW computers include a variety of software, including Adobe software used to convert MS Word documents into .pdf files. Equipment and supplies are available in the Workshop to produce posters, signs, digital images, and edit audio and video files. Use of the Workshop is done independently. Register and then meet at the Service Desk, 1st floor, Tompkins-McCaw Library, 509 N. 12th St., MCV Campus.

RefWorks: A Web-based Citation Management Program (Online Workshop)

During this online workshop you will learn to use RefWorks, an extremely useful tool that allows you to easily create and manage your own personal research database. With a personalized account, you can quickly add citations to your database as you are searching the literature. When you are ready, RefWorks will automatically generate your bibliography to finalize your grant, thesis, dissertation, or manuscript. Workshop: Accessing and Using Data From the National Center for Health Statistics

This workshop will provide attendees a brief outline of the major tools used to access NCHS data, the reasons for using each tool, and a brief demonstration using real, NCHS data as examples. Microdata access tools will be covered, including SETS, Beyond 20/20, Data Ferrett, CDC Wonder, Data 2010, and WISCARS. Seating is limited for this session; Advanced registration required. What! No Web? An Overview of Print Resources for Finding Health Information

Searching for information takes time, especially when looking for older material that is not available from your computer in a full text online format. This workshop will provide an overview of health sciences print resources to locate needed information, and guidance to help you 'hand search' the literature for articles that are more difficult to locate. The class will be held at the Tompkins-McCaw Library in LIMERC, Room 2-012. Advanced registration is recommended.

Super Searcher

This hands-on course focuses on the advanced search features of web search engines and the cutting edge of searching. Participants will use various search engines, compare the features and utility of each and develop search strategies that will increase the precision and scope of their searching. The students will have discussions, exercises and view short presentations as a part of the class. The class includes: discussions of web search engines, indexes and hybrids of the two, commercialism and how it influences searching, finding current events information with search engines, specialized databases for special needs and topics suggested by the participants.
