Linking to e-Books in Blackboard

Linking to ebrary titles:

  • Start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for the specific book.  E.g. http://site.ebrary.com.proxy.library.vcu.edu/lib/vacommonwealth/document/display.jsp?docID=10080994&page=1
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Counselling and the Life Course.
  • Be sure to include or link to instructions on how to download and install the ebrary reader (online tutorial for Windows IE or Firefox)

LINKING TO GALE VIRTUAL REFERENCE LIBRARY TITLES:

  • Start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for the specific book.  E.g. http://go.galegroup.com/ps/aboutEbook.do?actionString=DO_DISPLAY_ABOUT_PAGE&inPS=true&prodId=GVRL &userGroupName=viva_vcu&searchType=BasicSearchForm&docId=GALE%7C9780787677459&

linking to NETLIBRARY Titles:

  • You will need to link to titles through the VCU Libraries Catalog.  Locate the book by title.  You can do this by selecting the "Title begins with" radio button in the catalog search box on the home page.  Click to the link to view the full record.  Near the bottom of the record you'll see the ISBN number(s) for the book. 
  • To link to the catalog from Blackboard, copy and paste the following link:
    http://www.library.vcu.edu/phpapps/webscripts/catalog.php?stype=isbn&search=
  • Then copy and paste the book's ISBN number to the end of the link
    E.g. http://www.library.vcu.edu/phpapps/webscripts/catalog.php?stype=isbn&search=0585159564
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the actual book title.  You may want to make note that this link will take you to the catalog record and to click on the link in the record to access the book.  E.g. Game Theory and the Social Contract Vol. 1 (click the link in the catalog record to access the text on NetLibrary).
  • Be sure to include or link to instructions on how to create an individual account with NetLibrary

linking to oxford reference online titles:

  • Start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for the specific book.  E.g. http://www.oxfordreference.com/views/BOOK_SEARCH.html?book=t13&subject=s5
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. A Dictionary of Earth Sciences.

linking to MD consult titles:

  • Start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, add the bookmark URL for the specific title from MD Consult.  This can be found at the bottom of the page in relatively small print.  You will want to right click on it with your mouse and choose "Copy Link Location."  What you have copied will not look like that the URL says on your screen.  For example, the link /das/book/0/view/1565/instruct.html actually is copied as http://www.mdconsult.com/das/book/0/view/1565/instruct.html
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Sabiston Textbook of Surgery 18th Edition.

Linking to ncbi bookshelf titles:

  • As this is a free resource, you do not need to put in a proxy link for the library.  Simply just copy and paste the URL for the book you want to link to.   E.g. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv.fcgi?rid=altrehab.TOC&depth=2
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Alternative Medicine and Rehabilitation: A Guide for Practitioners.

Linking to statref titles:

  • When you have located the text you want to link to, make note of the the FxId.  E.g. http://online.statref.com/TOC/TOC.aspx?FxId=37&SessionId=BD2AEFJLMHVNGWLK
  • Start your link with http://online.statref.com/TOC.aspx?grpalias=VCU2
  • To the end of the link above, add an ampersand (&) and then the FxId.  The finished link should look like this: http://online.statref.com/TOC.aspx?grpalias=VCU2&FxId=37
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL - TEXT REVISION (DSM-IV-TR, 2000).
  • Note that users will need to agree to accept the Metathesaurus Copyright Notice before being taken to the text.

linking to acls humanities e-book documents:

  • Start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=

linking to columbia international affairs online (CIAO) documents:

  • Start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • When you have found the book you want to link to, right click on the PDF full text link and copy the link location.  E.g. http://www.ciaonet.org/book/grt01/grt01.pdf
  • Add the PDF full text link to the end of the library proxy link after the = sign.
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Russia's Decline and Uncertain Recovery.

linking to CRC Net base products and reference handbooks

CHEMnetBASE

  • To link to resources in CHEMnetBASE, start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for whatever resource you want to link to.  E.g. the CCD - http://ccd.chemnetbase.com/dictionary-search.do?method=view&id=676661
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the resource title
    E.g. Combined Chemical Dictionary.
  • Be sure to test all links to make sure they are working properly and note that there are some plugins required for the Combined Chemical Dictionary and the Properties of Organic Compounds to work.

ENGnetBASE

  • To link to a title in ENGnetBASE, start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for the specific title you want to link to.  E.g. http://www.engnetbase.com/ejournals/books/book_summary/summary.asp?id=508 (note this is to the menu page for the book, not the actual PDF - better link for more efficient navigation).
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Hydraulics of Pipeline Systems.

FORENSICnetBASE

  • To link to a title in FORENSICnetBASE, start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for the specific title you want to link to.  E.g. http://www.forensicnetbase.com/ejournals/books/book_summary/summary.asp?id=1917 (note this is to the menu page for the book, not the actual PDF - better link for more efficient navigation).
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Color Atlas of Autopsy.

MATERIALSnetBASE

  • To link to a title in MATERIALSnetBASE, start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=

linking to knovel library titles:

  • To link to a title in Knovel Library, start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • After the = sign, put in the URL for the specific title you want to link to. E.g. http://www.knovel.com/web/portal/browse/display?_EXT_KNOVEL_DISPLAY_bookid=1489 (note this is to the menu page for the book rather than the actual PDF chapters for more efficient navigation).
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Chemistry of Silica - Solubility, Polymerization, Colloid and Surface Properties and Biochemistry.

linking to safari books online

  • To link to a title in Safari Books Online, start your link with http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=http://search.safaribooksonline.com/?uiCode=vacom&xmlId=
  • When you have found your title on Safari, locate the ISBN number.  Copy and paste this number after the = sign.  Be sure to remove the dashes. E.g. http://search.safaribooksonline.com/?uiCode=vacom&xmlId=9780596514822
  • To avoid a lengthy link in your Blackboard Course, have the link text be the book title:
    E.g. Head First C#.
