Search Options

Documents or Journals?

  • Offers an advanced search feature for complex searches.
  • Limits are easily accessible on the search screen.
  • Select "Thesaurus" tab to access the ERIC thesaurus. Select "Indexes" tab to access a variety of fields.

  • Select "Thesaurus Search" to access the ERIC thesaurus.
  • Allows sorting of results by publication type, e.g., peer-reviewed journals, books, dissertations, etc.

  • ERIC Documents
  • Have an ED number, e.g. ED400625. You will need this number to search the ERIC site, or to find the microfiche.
  • Most from 1993 forward are available online. Look for a "Full Text" link in the database, or search by "ERIC #" at the ERIC site.
  • Most are also available on microfiche in Cabell Library, 3rd floor.

  • ERIC Journal Articles
  • Have an EJ number, e.g. EJ515756 - do not write it down.
  • If the Image of Get It at VCU button button is available, use it for retrieval options. Otherwise . . .
  • Write down the source information, e.g., Guidance & Counselling (v11 n1 p21-24 Aut 1995). Then . . .
    1. Do a title search for the name of the journal in the VCU Libraries E-Journals Search.
    2. Should the journal (or issue) not be available electronically, click the Search VCU Libraries Catalog link in the upper right of the results page.
    3. If the journal is listed in the catalog, click the "All Items" link in the Library Holdings field to see a list of the specific issues VCU Libraries holds (owns).
    4. If the journal is not available at all through VCU Libraries, submit an interlibrary loan request for the article.
