Join the VCU Libraries in honoring women in all fields of medical sciences.  The opening reception celebrates the contributions of VCU's own Dr. Marcella Fierro, Dr. Eleanor Sue Cantrell, and Dr. Yvonnecris Smith Veal, who are featured in this exhibit. Also in attendance will be Ms. Carolease Ballou Wallace, retired VCU School of Nursing Faculty member. The reception is free and open to the public, but a reservation is required to reserve your space.

Ms. Elvatrice Parker Belsches, MA, RPh, is an archival researcher, author and pharmacist living in the Richmond area. Ms. Belsches is an emerging authority on the life of Dr. Sarah G. Jones MD, the first known woman of any race to be granted a medical license  by the the Virginia State Board of Medicine. Belsches will discuss her new and corrective scholarship on this pioneering physician as the author of her biographical entry for Harvard University's upcoming publication, the African American National Biography, (Oxford University Press, Spring 2008) and the author of Richmond, Virginia, a Black America Series publication (now in its sixth printing).

Secretary Marilyn Tavenner was appointed Secretary of Health and Human Resources by Governor Kaine in January of 2006.  As Secretary of Health and Human Resources, she oversees 12 agencies, employing over 18,000 people, including the Departments of Health, Mental Health, Social Services, Health Professions and Medical Assistance Services.

Lisa Kaplowitz, MD, MSHA, is the Deputy Commissioner for Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R) at the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), a position she has held since August, 2002. In this position, she is responsible for the development and implementation of Virginia’s public health response to all natural and man made emergencies.

Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford is the associate executive director and director of the Center for Equity and Diversity at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sinkford also is professor emeritus and dean emeritus of the Howard University College of Dentistry. She is the first woman dean of an American dental school.

Daphne Bryan, M.D. will serve as the keynote speaker.  Her lecture will examine the causes of obesity, obesity related diseases, and strategies that can be used to help address this growing problem.  In addition to her lecture, a fitness expert from the YMCA will demonstrate exercise routines and a nutritionist will provide healthy eating tips.  Healthy snacks will be provided.  This event is free and open to the public.
