How Do I...?
Check out and renew library materials?
Checking Out Library Materials
Use your VCUCard to check out books and other library materials. Materials in the stacks can be checked out at the Circulation Desk, which is located across from Java 901 near the library entrance. Items located in Media and Reserves (3rd floor, Cabell Library) can be checked out from that location. See the Borrowing Privileges page for details about how many materials you can check out and for how long.
Renewing Library Materials
To renew library materials online, use My Library Record. For more information, see the Circulation and Information Services page on Renewing Materials.
Use your VCUCard to check out books and other library materials. At Cabell Library, materials in the stacks can be checked out at the Circulation Desk, which is located across from Java 901 near the library entrance. Items located in Media and Reserves on the third floor can be checked out from that location.
At Tompkins-McCaw Library, materials can be checked out from the Service Desk on the first floor. See the Borrowing Privileges page for details about how many materials you can check out and for how long.
To search for reserves, use the online Course Reserves Catalog. You can search for reserves either by the course number or instructor's last name.
Some reserves are in print, while others are online (e-reserves). If you are off campus and attempting to view an e-reserve item, you will be prompted to log in using your eID username and password. If the reserved item is in print, record the call number and retrieve it from the Media and Reserves service desk on the third floor of Cabell Library or the first floor service desk at Tompkins-McCaw.
Get items not available at VCU Libraries?
If you need materials that are missing or not owned by the VCU Libraries, there are two methods of acquiring the items you need.
Richmond Academic Library Consortium (RALC):
If you are willing to travel to another Richmond academic library that
has the book you need, you can check it out using your VCU Card
and a RALC Pass, available at the Cabell Library Reference Desk
or the Tompkins-McCaw Library Service Desk. See the RALC
page for more details and for a list of participating libraries.
Interlibrary Loan Services:
You can fill out an Interlibrary Loan request and library staff will acquire them for you. Articles and shorter materials can be delivered electronically and books are available for pickup at the service desk of your choice. See the Interlibrary Loan page for more information.
Librarians are available to help you with any research project you may have. You can contact a librarian in the following ways:
- Visit the Reference Desk in Cabell Library or the Service Desk at the Tompkins McCaw Library.
- Email a librarian.
- Schedule an individual research consultation.
- Call a librarian.
For details on how to take advantage of these services, see the VCU Libraries' Ask a Librarian page.
To find training opportunities including workshops, see the VCU Libraries Calendar of Events.
