ICPSR at VCU Libraries

Hardware & Software

To analyze ICPSR data you must have statistical software e.g., SAS, SPSS, or STATA, all of which are available from Technology Services. Additional software available at VCU is on the Technology Services software list. In order to work with data downloaded from ICPSR, you will need to have sufficient system memory and drive space to work with and store your files.  When uncompressed, many data files are 100 megabytes or larger.  You may opt to work with and store files on your personal computer.  You can also download files and save them onto removable media to work with in your departmental computing lab or office (CD R/W, USB Drive).

Please note that if you are comfortable working with UNIX that you may use Hubert, the central VCU UNIX system for research requiring statistical and database applications.

Statistical Package Training & Help

If you want to learn more about a particular statistical software package, VCU Technology Services regularly offers free classes for VCU students, faculty and staff on both SAS and SPSS.  See LearnIT for current training opportunities..

Technology Services offers free statistical consulting (by appointment) that can help you determine what analysis methods to use, what software you need, and assistance using statistical packages available at VCU.  Please note that programming and data analysis services are not available.
