What are the University Archives?
The archives of Virginia Commonwealth University have been divided according to the geographical location of the predecessor insitution, division, school or department in relation to the current structure of the University. Records generated by the offices located on the Medical Campus or the Biotechnology Research Park are located in Special Collections and Archives at the Tompkins-McCaw Library on the Medical Campus (MCV).
The records on the Monroe Park Campus include those of its predecessor institution, Richmond Professional Institute (RPI). In addition to the permanent, official records of various offices, departments, administrators, committees and VCU related organizations, Special Collections & Archives holds other material pertaining to this campus.
A large collection of University publications are housed in SCA, including back issues of The Commonwealth Times and the VCU Voice. Other publications housed in SCA include the various incarnations of the student newspaper, Student Yearbooks (1933-present), Undergraduate and Graduate Bulletins, files of flyers, brochures, annual reports, and newsletters -- created by various departments, committees, and VCU related organizations.
Special Collections also maintains a file of newspaper articles pertaining to VCU dating from the 1970s. The VCU Photograph Collection contains over 1,000 photos specifically related to the Monroe Park Campus, staff, students and faculty dating from the 1920s.
