A week worth's of events is open to the public - November 16th through the 20th, 2009 - on the Monroe Park Campus of VCU.
Join us as Virginia Commonwealth University commemorates the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia, which took place Nov. 20, 1909, at 919 W. Franklin St., now VCU’s Crenshaw House. The ESL became the League of Women Voters of Virginia in 1920, shortly after the 19th Amendment was ratified granting women the right to vote.
Nov. 16, 2009 - 7 p.m. University Student Commons Theater 907 Floyd Ave. “Iron Jawed Angels,” a 2004 HBO production. Much of it filmed in Richmond, Va. Stars Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston, and tells the story of the struggle of several suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th amendment.
Nov. 19, 2009 - 7 p.m. University Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballroom 907 Floyd Ave. Librarian of Virginia Sandra G. Treadway, Ph.D. will present “A Lady’s Place is in the House [of Delegates]: Virginia Women in Politics, 1909-2009.”
Nov. 20, 2009 - Noon Suffrage march and official renaming of the Crenshaw House Participants will gather on the Shafer Court side of Ginter House, 901 W. Franklin St., and march to the Crenshaw House, 919 W. Franklin St. |
Mrs. Anne Clay Crenshaw, ca. 1900. She and her family hosted the first two meetings of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia in November of 1909.

Located on the fourth floor of the James Branch Cabell Library, Special Collections and Archives houses books, journals, manuscript collections, photographs, and other materials that support the Monroe Park Campus programs of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Special Collections and Archives contains nearly 40,000 volumes in special subject areas, including Virginia and Richmond history and literature, popular culture and graphic arts, comic arts, artist books, and much more. The department also houses the official records and archives of VCU and its predecessor institutions (Richmond Professional Institute). If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.
Special Collections and Archives is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 A.M. until 5 P.M. All other times are by appointment. For materials related to medical history and to the records of the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU, visit the Special Collections and Archives department at the Tompkins-McCaw Library.
