VCU Buildings:

VCU Images -- Many of the images used in this site were photographed by Jennifer Watson and Linda George of VCU's Creative Services. For more information about VCU buildings, including numerous images, visit this site created by Creative Services which is full of exterior and interior images of VCU buildings. It has links to other images sites created by that department.

Another valuable resource is the text of Kerri Culhane's 1997 M.A. thesis `The Fifth Avenue of Richmond': The Development of the 800 and 900 Blocks of West Franklin Street, Richmond, Virginia, 1855-1925." -- This thesis is one of the most important works for researchers interested in the architecture of VCU, the Fan District, and late 19th and early 20th Richmond. The site was created and maintained by Special Collections and Archives.

Architectural History:

Visit this site for specific information about Architectural History Resources in Special Collections and Archives at the James Branch Cabell Library. Some of the most architectural significant buildings of 19th and 20th century Richmond, Virginia are located on, or adjacent to, the campuses of VCU. Richmond's architectural history is a growing area of collection for Special Collections and Archives. A major focus of this collection is documenting the architecture of what is known today as the Fan District, which includes VCU's Monroe Park Campus.

Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1881): There are currently very few online resources devoted to the life and work of Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1881) whose influence on architecture in the late 19th century can be seen in buildings across the country, including Richmond. The sites below primarily focus on specific buildings built by Richardson.

Great Buildings Online -- Architect Henry Hobson Richardson -- Created by Artifice, Inc., an architectural software company, this site includes information and images of nearly a dozen Richardson buildings.

H. H. Richardson Architectural Drawings -- Harvard University Library's site on their collection of Richardson drawings.

An Introduction to American Cultural Expression during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era -- A site created by Robert W. Cherny, Professor of History, San Francisco State University, with images and information about some Richardson buildings, placing them in the context of the architecture of the late 19th century.

Richardsonian Romanesque -- This site is maintained by Logia.com which describes their company as "dedicated to the study of the arts and humanities" created by "by a pair of dedicated individuals that share their knowledge and passion for the arts with quality information resources." This page of their site focuses on Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.
