Oral History Research

In African American culture, oral history has served a crucial role in preserving a heritage that has often been threatened with oblivion.  Those who have committed their lives to remembering and preserving the first-person truth of African American history are commemorated during Black History Month celebrations at VCU.

The links provided on these pages -- including the Voices of Freedom project available through the Special Collections Department at VCU's James Branch Cabell LIbrary -- comprise a sample of the numerous web resources that focus on the importance of oral history in the African American tradition.  Many of the sites feature audio files of original recordings of African Americans relating their experiences.  VCU Libraries welcomes requests for further research assistance in any aspect of Civil Rights history.
