Historical Quilt
Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church

vbha

[The quilt shown above was begun in 1996 and completed in 1997. It was made by the Victory Club of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church to celebrate the church's 130th anniversary. The text below was composed by Benjamin Ross, Church Historian for Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church.]

The quilt presented was made by the members of the VICTORY CLUB of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. The quilt measures 15 feet by 10 feet in size and is composed of 45 individual panels. Each panel offers a visual display of the organizations, events or activities that have distinguished the history of our church and represents each facet of our church's life. The center panel, for the example, is called "DE SUN DO MOVE" named appropriately for John Jasper's famous sermon. It offers a brilliant yellow sun against a blue sky and sun rays shooting out around it.

The members of the Victory Club have worked diligently for many months sewing each individual panel, and finally sewing all panels together to form the entire quilt. To assist them, they consulted with sewing and quilting experts, design technicians, and fabric specialists to ensure that our quilt would be a professional product, and one that the church would be proud to display.

In the future, persons from all over the world will have the opportunity to view the quilt once it hangs on permanent display against the east wall of the bell tower.
