Index to VCU's Annual Architectural Symposium Abstracts
This annual conference was begun in 1993 by Dr. Charles E. Brownell, the head of VCU's Architectural History Program. In the words of Dr. Brownell, the conference was created "to air valuable work by current and recent VCU graduate students, as well as important research by other members of the VCU family circle." Over the years VCU students have addressed such themes as Jefferson's Architectural World (1993), Women and Virginia Architecture (1995), Architecture and the Decorative Arts (1997) and Classics and Classicism (2001). This event has brought national recognition to the architectural history program and the university. Dr. Brownell has lectured and published widely on his specialties, including Jefferson and Latrobe. He is co-author of the award winning Virginia Museum book The Making of Virginia Architecture. The Twelfth Annual VCU Symposium on Architectural History and The Decorative Arts will take place Friday, November 19, 2004.
For four years (1994, 1996, 1997, 1998) abstracts of the papers presented were published and are housed in Special Collections and Archives. Many of the 37 published abstracts focus on Richmond architecture. This site lists the titles of each abstract. If you have any questions, please email Special Collections and Archives.
