Importing References Into RefWorks

There are several ways to import references into your RefWorks account. How to do this varies from database to database, so we provide Instructions for importing references from specific databases. Click on the database name to produce the PDF instruction sheet. The typical ways to import are:

Export Directly from a Database

Most VCU Libraries databases have a way to export references directly into RefWorks.

References exported directly from a database into RefWorks always appear in the Last Imported Folder. You should assign them to the folder or folders of your choice.

Create Text Files for Copying or Importing

Some databases do not have a direct export feature, but do have a way to create a text file that you may have to email to yourself, save for importing later, or copy and paste.

References exported from text files into RefWorks always appear in the Last Imported Folder. You should assign them to the folder or folders of your choice.

Export a Citation from the Get it @ VCU Menu

NOTE: USE THIS TYPE OF EXPORT WITH CAUTION
The RefWorks link on the Get it @ VCU Menu will export some or sometimes all of the citation directly into RefWorks. This is intended as an easy way to enter single citations when you do not need the abstract or descriptors; when there is no way to export into RefWorks; or when the exporting procedure is overly cumbersome. Generally, use this method as a last resort.

Citations exported directly from the Get it @ VCU menu into RefWorks always appear in the Last Imported Folder. You should assign them to the folder or folders of your choice. Be sure to check the reference in RefWorks as there will probably be missing information such as additional authors or an entire lengthy title.

Add a Reference Manually

Occasionally, you will need to import references manually, e.g., when you find the references in a bibliography. To enter references manually, open your RefWorks account and select References from the toolbar, then Add New Reference. Select the output style you prefer (MLA, APA, Chicago), and select the Ref Type. Enter the information you have. [RefWorks Help - Adding References Manually]

Search PubMed or Library Catalogs via RefWorks

You may import references from PubMed and a number of library catalogs, including the VCU Libraries catalog, by conducting your search within RefWorks. Open your RefWorks account, select Search from the toolbar, and then Online Catalog or Database. PubMed is the first item on the list and the VCU Libraries catalog is located in the alphabetical list. Select the number of results you wish to import and conduct your search. Select Import to export the references to the Last Imported Folder. You may simultaneously export them to a folder of your choice. This feature functions in a separate window.
