Saving Your References When You Leave VCU
RefWorks Alumni Program
Students, faculty, and staff with RefWorks accounts who leave VCU may continue to have access to RefWorks through the RefWorks Alumni Program. As a participant in the program, you will be entitled to:
- One free RefWorks account
- New updates and feature releases
- 200 MB of file attachment storage
- Use of RefShare to share your folder(s) or account
- Free Web-based training
- Technical support from RefWorks staff
To request participation in the RefWorks Alumni Program, submit an Ask Us email (https://www.library.vcu.edu/forms/comments.html), or contact the RefWorks Administrator for VCU Libraries:

Saving for Use in a New RefWorks Account
If you are moving to an institution that subscribes to RefWorks, or if you are going to continue with RefWorks through the Alumni Program, use the Backup/Restore feature under Tools. "Backup" will save your database complete with folders. Use "Restore" in your new EMPTY RefWorks account to import all your references and place them in your folders. Restore overwrites the account, so do not use Restore in an account that already has references.
Saving for Use in a Non-RefWorks File
If you will be using a different bibliographic management tool, or if you are not sure what you will be using, use the Export feature under Tools or References. You may export all your references, selected references in My List, or references in a selected folder. This feature DOES NOT retain folder designations, so export folder by folder if you wish to keep the same organizational structure for your references.
Warning for Shared Folder Users
VCU Libraries deletes inactive accounts on an annual basis. Any shared folders will disappear when your inactive account is deleted.
