How do I get a copy of a dissertation?
- First check to see if it is available in Dissertations and Theses Full Text (Proquest) (VCU only)
- Full text of dissertations from 1997 to the present and full text for some earlier dissertations.
- UMI Dissertation Express
- You can purchase copies of dissertations through UMI, the producer of Dissertation Abstracts. Submit your order online or print out a form to mail or fax. Note that the order form allows you to search for dissertations by author or title.
- Interlibrary Loan (VCU only)
- Interlibrary Loan will attempt to borrow dissertations from other libraries. While there is no charge for this service, it is often difficult to obtain a dissertation through Interlibrary Loan. Other libraries may not be able to lend their dissertations and the only loanable copy might be in microfiche or microfilm format.

Masters theses and doctoral dissertations completed at Virginia Commonwealth University are available within the VCU Libraries. Find these through the VCU Libraries Search, search by author, title or keyword (including department or degree name). To limit searches use the keywords (thesis virginia commonwealth university) or view all VCU theses and dissertations.
