Study Rooms Group Study Room Policy
James Branch Cabell Library
Study rooms and a group study/tutoring area in James Branch Cabell Library are available to allow groups of two or more users to work and discuss together without disturbing others. The following regulations provide fair access to the study rooms and the group study/tutoring area as well as ensure accountability for responsible use.
WHO CAN USE A STUDY ROOM
- Study rooms are available to groups of two or more people and to individuals with a demonstrated study or research-related need for a private room (e.g. using a tape recorder to tape notes or practice a speech).
- At least one member of the group must be a VCU student, faculty, or staff.
- Groups have priority over individuals in the event all study rooms are in use. Individuals seeking a quiet place to study are encouraged to go to the designated "quiet floor" (fourth floor).
HOW TO GET A STUDY ROOM
Study rooms are available on a first come, first served basis only. Rooms are
not locked and are monitored by library staff.
HOW LONG TO USE A STUDY ROOM
Limit your use of a room to two hours. The time may be extended if there is
no other group or individual waiting.
LOCATIONS OF STUDY ROOMS AND GROUP STUDY/TUTORING AREA
- Study rooms are located on the first floor (rooms 140-157) and the third floor (rooms 311-315) of Cabell Library.
- A section of the second floor has been designated the "group study/tutoring area." Please use this area if all study rooms are occupied.
PROPER USE OF STUDY ROOMS AND GROUP STUDY/TUTORING AREA
- Rules regulating study rooms and the group study/tutoring area are the same as applied to Cabell Library as a whole. All library materials should be returned to the proper location and should not be left in the rooms or on tables. Particularly, note that there is to be no smoking in the study rooms and group study/tutoring area. All persons in a group are equally responsible for making sure library policies are followed.
- As a courtesy to other library patrons, please keep noise to a minimum.
- If you find the room damaged or littered with trash, please report the problem to the Circulation and Information Desk staff immediately to avoid liability.
ACCOUNTABILITY FOR USE OF STUDY ROOMS AND GROUP STUDY/TUTORING AREA
- Use of a study room or the group study/tutoring area implies consent to follow the policies and rules of the library.
- Reports of abuse of policies may result in study room privileges and other library services (e.g., checking out of library materials) being denied.
- You will be responsible for any fines resulting from damage to the study rooms or the group/study tutoring area. You may be fined the costs of repairs or clean-up as determined by the University Librarian.
- You will be denied other library services until all fines are resolved. If it is possible to assign damage or misuse of a room to an individual or a group, that person or those persons will lose library privileges for at least the remainder of the semester.
