Linking to Full-Text in a Health Sciences Syllabus or Blackboard Course

This page includes information regarding building stable Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) to connect to online articles in your online syllabus or Blackboard course. In general you should be aware that:

  • In many cases, a single typo will invalidate your URL.
  • Except for the "see above" links, ALL of the links from this page open a new browser window.

Cochrane Library

  • Connect to the Cochrane Library VCU, a database of systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare.
  • Find the article or systematic review of interest.
  • Copy the URL displayed by the browser when viewing the html article.
  • Add the following to the beginning of the web address without any spaces - http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • Example: Anticoagulants for acute ischaemic stroke.
  • Please note that you may also link to a specific search of the Cochrane Library by copying the URL from the search results screen and then substituting the beginning of the URL as above.

InfoTrac (or Health and Wellness Resource Center)

Journals @ Ovid

  • Connect to the Journals @ Ovid VCU and find the desired article.
  • Click on the Complete Reference for the article.
  • Copy the accession number from the beginning of the citation. This is the field that looks like:
    Accession Number: 0000xxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxx
    Note: There is a period following the Accession Number. Do not copy the period.
  • Add the accession number to the generic Journals@Ovid URL following AN=:
    http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=http://gateway.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=

MDConsult

  • Connect to MD Consult VCU and find the desired article.
  • Highlight and copy the Bookmark URL text at the end of the article/document. It will look something like this -

    journal/view/N/10046989?source=HS,MI
  • Add this copied text to the following URL base:

Using the VCU Libraries graphic link

  • Connect to PubMed® VCU and find the VCU Libraries Link to the desired article. You must change the summary display format in PubMed to "abstract" or "citation" to see the links to VCU Libraries full-text.
  • You must see the VCU Libraries graphic in the "abstract" or "citation" view to be able to link to the full text.
  • Using your mouse, right click on the VCU Libraries graphic and select "copy link location" from the fly out menu
  • Paste the text as a link in your web document.
  • Add the following to the beginning of the web address without any spaces - http://proxy.library.vcu.edu/login?url=
  • Example: Bioterrorism: vaccines for biodefense: a system in distress

Next

  • Once you have connected to the specific article of interest you may wish to provide a link to the PDF version from the publisher rather than going through PubMed
  • Display the PDF version of the article and copy the URL from the browser window.
  • Paste the link in your web document
