Google Scholar and VCU Libraries Access -Setting Preferences
To set up Google Scholar to show which articles can be accessed via VCU Libraries’ subscriptions whenever you are searching from off-campus, you need to set your Google Scholar preferences. Set preferences by clicking the Scholar Preferences link to the right of the search window. In the search box for Institutional Access, search for "Virginia." Check the check-box beside Virginia Commonwealth University.
At this point you can click "Save Preferences" and you will now see "Get It@VCU" as one of your options when searching.

Or you can scroll down the page to set your preferences under Bibliography Manager to show a link for downloading citations to RefWorks.

Press 'Save Preferences' to save your bibliography manager choice.
Another option is to use the VCU Libraries link to Google Scholar, available through the VCU Libraries A-Z list. The default preferences include the VCU Get it link and a RefWorks link.
Please note, VCU Libraries subscription information will automatically show up when searching Google Scholar from campus, and you will automatically be permitted to access library resources. "Google Scholar" will now show the phrase “Get It at VCU Online” or "Get It@VCU"with many citations listed in your search results. This may appear in two ways…
- If “Get it at VCU Online” appears on the first line of your citation, then Google Scholar knows that VCU subscribes to that journal online and clicking on “Get it at VCU Online” will link you to the journal or the article itself.
- If"Get It@VCU" appears at the bottom right of the citation, then VCU Libraries MAY have that journal on the web or on the library shelves in printed form. Click on “Get It at VCU” to search the library catalog and find out where VCU Libraries keeps that journal.
The "Import into RefWorks" link will open a RefWorks window where you will need to login (don't forget group login as well if you are off campus) and then the citation will be imported.
If “Get it @ VCU” does not appear, then please follow the “web search” link (see below) to get the full citation so you can request the article through our ILLiad interlibrary loan/delivery system or, in cases where the journal is available free on the web, you can retrieve it yourself.
