Established in 1897, the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences is one of the nation’s oldest health sciences libraries. Tompkins-McCaw Library has the largest health sciences collection in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is noted for its rich historical special collections, archives, and collection of medical artifacts.
The Library collections support the academic programs on the MCV Campus of VCU, including the Schools of Allied Health, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and the new School of Public Health. Clinical patient care and research activities of the University and VCU Health System are also supported by the collections.
The general collection of monographs is located on the second floor of the Library. Search the Catalog to find titles and call numbers. The Catalog also lists new acquisitions to the collection.
The Reference Collection contains print copies of directories, encyclopedias, handbooks, core textbooks, statistical sources, bibliographies, and atlases. The collection is located on the first floor near the Service Desk. Reference materials may only be used in the library.
A majority of journal titles are now available online. Search the Catalog or use the Journal Finder to connect to electronic editions of journals. Current issues of print journals are located on the first floor of the Library. Older bound volumes are filed alphabetically by title beginning on the basement level.
Located on the basement level, the Media Collection contains videos, slides, computer software and other multimedia on health sciences topics. Materials may be checked out for personal use.
Theses and Dissertations
Masters theses and doctoral dissertations from selected departments on the MCV Campus are available within the library. The Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Project provides online access to many recent works by VCU graduate students. Search the Catalog or contact the Service Desk for assistance in locating theses and dissertations.
Special Collections and Archives
Manuscripts, archives, artifacts, photographs, portraits and prints related to the history of health care in Virginia are located in Special Collections and Archives on the first floor of the Library.
