Guide to Basic Library Services
Welcome to the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences on the Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. This guide is an overview of selected services offered. For additional information, please ask at the Service Desk.

Your main point of contact at the library, stop here to ask questions, borrow and return books, pick up materials requested through interlibrary loan, or review materials that have been placed on reserve by your instructor. The service desk is where you will pay for library fines and other charges, such as workshop materials. Keys to the Instructional Media Workshop may be checked out at the service desk. You can also obtain headphones for library use for up to 4 hours, as well as dry erase markers to use in the group study rooms. The quiet study room is located on the second floor, room 2-001.

The library subscribes to nearly 2,400 medical & health-related print and electronic journals. Current journal issues are located on the first floor. Bound volumes are shelved alphabetically by title on several floors of the library. The circulating book collection is located on the second floor. Multimedia materials and government documents are in the basement. Photocopiers are available in the basement and on the first floor for self-service copying. Copies of articles may be requested through interlibrary loan or the library’s fee-based photocopy service.
Multimedia Collaboration Room 828-0636
The Multimedia Collaboration Room (Room B-037) is a self-service facility available to VCU faculty, staff and students for study and multimedia computing. Orientations to the MCR are available please contact staff at the Tompkins-McCaw Library Service Desk.
Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery Services
Use ILLiad, the automated interlibrary loan and document delivery system, to request various materials.
Special Collections & Archives 828-9898
If you are interested in the history of the health sciences, visit Special Collections & Archives on the first floor of the library. Here you will find rare books and manuscripts as well as a collection of health-related apparatus and instruments. Historical records for the MCV Campus are also housed in this location.

Tompkins-McCaw Library provides training opportunities throughout the year to help users develop skills in information management. A wide variety of seminars are offered at no cost to VCU faculty, staff, and students. Library staff are also available to design a customized instruction session for your course or group.
