1931: Buildings Razed for Construction

MCV President William T. Sanger began working to acquire land for aggressive expansion of the college's physical plant very soon after taking the post in 1925. These structures on the 500 block of North 12th Street were destroyed to make way for the College Library and the Richmond Academy of Medicine.

1932: MCV College Library Dedicated

The library collections of the Medical College of Virginia received a permanent home with the opening of the new library building on 12th Street, built in a Georgian style at a cost of $126,000. The structure originally housed student government offices, the Board of Visitors conference room, and the College YMCA.

The new library remained a show place for MCV during the 1930s and hosted numerous open houses, teas, and meetings. The building housed the special exhibition prepared for the Centennial of MCV and Bicentennial of Richmond in 1937-1938.
