1940-1949
1947: Library Director Dr. E.C.L. Miller Retires
Dr. Miller began his association with the college library in 1913 when it was still housed in a small room within McGuire Hall. He became the directing librarian in 1930 and focused his efforts on developing the fledgling book and journal collection. By the time of his retirement in 1947, the library's collection consisted of 38,000 volumes and was considered one of the best in the South.
1947: Reference Room
A key tool the library made available to patrons was Index Medicus, a bibliographic listing of references in medical journals worldwide prepared by the US National Library of Medicine. Publication began in 1879, and has since been supplanted by MEDLINE/PubMed.
1947: Librarian Florence McRae Retires
Florence McRae, an early member of the Medical Library Association, served as the college librarian for 33 years. During her tenure the library collections were moved four times until they were finally placed in the 12th Street building. MCV honored McRae for her long service by naming a dormitory in her memory in 1959.
