About This Collection
Special Collections & Archives houses the historical records of the Medical Department of Hampden-Sydney College (1838-1854), the Medical College of Virginia (1854-1968), the University College of Medicine (1893-1913) and the non-current records of the Medical College of Virginia campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. This includes faculty minutes dating from the 1840s, records of the Board of Visitors of the Medical College of Virginia (1854-1968) and the University College of Medicine (1893-1913), college catalogs (1838-present), faculty files, reports and publications. The MCV archives also includes theses and dissertations written by students since the 1930s. The archives also includes a number of audio-visual materials including photographs, portraits, films, and videotapes. Guides and inventories of these materials are available in Special Collections & Archives at Tompkins-McCaw Library.
