Licensed Practical Nurses Association of Virginia
On April 19, 1947, white licensed practical nurses from all sections of Virginia met at the Hotel John Marshall in Richmond to establish the Licensed Practical Nurses Association of Virginia (LPNAV). Alice Nelson, LPN, of Richmond was elected as the first President. From the beginning the Association was a constituent of the National Association of practical Nurse Education until the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses (NFLPN) was organized in 1949. The LPNAV met jointly with the Virginia Colored Practical Nurses Association (VCPNA) at the Hotel Roanoke in 1971. The delegates voted unanimously to merge the two organizations to form the Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse Association (VLPNA).
