The Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame

The Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame had its genesis in 1998 when the Virginia Nurses Association Centennial Committee first discussed creating a memorial for those nurses whose achievements and dedication have profoundly influenced the profession. The Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame is designed to stimulate interest in the history of nursing in the Commonwealth and to perpetuate the legacy of those nurses who shaped health care in Virginia.

The Joint History Committee of the Virginia Nurses Association (VNA) and the Virginia League for Nursing (VLN) undertook the development of selection criteria and selected the inaugural class of inductees in the spring of 2001. The Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame was unveiled on 2 May 2001 during a gala honoring nurses receiving the Centennial Nurse Award of the Virginia Nurses Association. This gala was the culmination of the VNA's "Century to Celebrate," a three year program honoring the one-hundreth anniversary of the founding of theVirginia Nurses Association.

The Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame is maintained as part of the Virginia Nursing Archives by Special Collections and Archives of the Tompkins-McCaw Library at Virginia Commonwealth University.
