Description

The Workshop hosts virtual hands-on demonstrations of tools and software available at home to help you be productive and creative on academic and personal projects.

Video Captioning (Zoom, Kaltura and YouTube)

Oscar Keyes, The Workshop (in collaboration with Student Accessibility and Education Opportunity)
As universities respond to accessibility issues in teaching, adding captions to instructional videos and online courses is a priority. This workshop covers the basics of planning, creating, captioning and uploading video content that serves hearing-impaired users. The principles of Universal Design for Learning will be discussed. VCU requires captioning of any video (lectures and scholarly presentations) published on YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook or any other publicly available platform.

Intro to Instagram Filters with Spark AR

This workshop covers the basics of creating Instagram filters using the new Spark AR from the Adobe Creative Suite. There will be a brief overview of the software, paired with time for creative play and exploration with the application. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own simple filters and receive troubleshooting support from the facilitators.

Build Community through Online Music Making

Music brings people together, but how can we make music when we’re far apart? As musicians have adjusted to new COVID safety protocols, there remain many challenges for recording and performing together. This workshop covers basic workflows for structuring collaborative music-making sessions and projects. These techniques will demystify and break down some of these barriers for music production during COVID and create new pathways for community-building.

Visual Communications in the Sciences

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, the ability to represent ideas graphically—through images, charts, infographics, animation and graphic design—is a crucial tool in the scientist’s toolbox.  Come learn about these different approaches and how to decide when it's best to use each in presenting your research. This interactive workshop covers the basics of design as they most apply to the sciences.

Remote Podcasting

While nothing can replace the energy of two co-hosts in a room together, there are powerful possibilities for remote podcasting. This workshop covers workflows and strategies for conducting, recording and editing podcasts created over the internet. This session will provide overviews of SoundTrap and CleanFeed, web-based tools that can be used for live interviews, and share tips for cleaning and restoring audio recorded over Zoom or other video-conferencing software.

Premiere Pro Team Projects and Remote Video Editing Workflows (in collaboration with VCU da Vinci Center)

Gain a deeper and more advanced understanding of the creative tool used by Hollywood filmmakers, TV editors and anyone with a story to tell. Adobe's video expert Jonathan Carrera presents Premiere Pro's newest and greatest features, workflows and automated tools powered by Adobe Sensei that speed up time-consuming tasks so you can focus on your story.

Creating Virtual Worlds with PlayCanvas

Virtual Worlds is a teaching resource focusing on experiencing, making and sharing virtual places using a 3D real-time gaming engine. There are versions of this curriculum designed for both PlayCanvas and Unity. This content is applicable to K12 and higher education as well as useful for both in-person and remote instruction. This workshop includes an overview of the resource, student examples and an activity covering the basics of PlayCanvas.

Creating Interactive Games/Stories with Twine

Twine is an open-source tool for telling interactive, nonlinear stories. This workshop covers the various applications of this tool, demonstrating its use for creative and research purposes. This session includes a brief introduction, relevant examples and  time for explorations and play.

Collaborative Poetry with Google Docs

Poetry has long been used as a tool of self-expression. As this historic semester comes to an end, Multimedia Teaching and Learning Librarian Oscar Keyes and poet/event specialist Gregory Kimbrell lead a collaborative poetry activity using Google Docs that makes a great starter for meaningful conversations. No poetry expertise required.

However, there are many programs, websites and applications that can help make this process more engaging for instructors and students alike. This workshop covers a breadth of collaborative tools, ranging from doodling together on Google Jamboard to creating virtual worlds with PlayCanvas in real-time editing.
