Data Management Bootcamp

Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, 2nd Floor Distance Education Room
509 North 12th Street, Richmond, VA 23298

Data management is an important topic for researchers and scholars across domains, especially as funding agencies increasingly require submission of data management plans with grant proposals. These new requirements encourage researchers to plan ahead for data management and sharing and help to promote practices that facilitate reproducible research, data use and reuse and interoperability among distributed systems.

Graduate students, faculty, administrators and staff interested in learning more about data management issues and best practices are invited to participate in a Data Management Bootcamp sponsored by seven Virginia institutions, Jan. 7–9, 2015. This collaborative event features experts from across the state and provides opportunities for local, hands-on practical experience. Topics include: finding and reusing data, documentation and metadata, data wrangling, rights and access, database creation and more. Madelyn Wessel of VCU University Counsel will speak on the legal aspects of data rights, access and protection of intellectual property.

The VCU viewing of the Data Management Bootcamp lectures will take place in the second-floor Distance Education Room (2-010) in the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences. The course will run 12:30–4 p.m. on Wednesday, 8:45 a.m.–4 p.m. on Thursday and 8:45 a.m. to noon on Friday. Drinks and snacks will be available, and lunch will be provided on Thursday.

The event is free and open to researchers and students at other universities and colleges, but seats are limited. If you have a VCU eID, please register through this online form. If you do not have a VCU eID and would like to register or if you have questions, please contact Margaret Henderson, director of research data management, at (804) 628-2714 or Parking is available for a fee in the 8th Street parking deck.
