Open Textbook Workshops
James Branch Cabell Library, Room 205
901 Park Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23284
Are you an instructor who is concerned about the impact of high textbook costs on your students? Explore possible alternatives by attending a one-hour workshop and writing a short review. Unfortunately, our stipend funds for these workshops have been exhausted, and we can no longer offer stipends to applicants. However, we are placing all applicants on a wait list in case stipends should become available. We also invite faculty to attend a workshop session regardless of stipend availability. If you are interested, please fill out the application form to indicate which workshop you would like to attend.
Did you know:
- The high cost of course materials can impede students' academic success.
- The College Board estimates that the average undergraduate can expect to pay $1,298 for textbooks and supplies in 2015–16.
- The cost of textbooks is rising at a rate of 4 times inflation.
- Seven out of 10 students don't purchase a required textbook during their academic career because of cost.
- 60% of students have delayed purchasing textbooks until they've received their financial aid.
Attend one of the Open Textbook Workshops—one hour sessions where you can learn about textbook costs and open textbooks as an affordable alternative. Open textbooks can help alleviate the burden of textbook costs for students and provide faculty with content that can be customized for their course. After the workshop, you'll be asked to write a short review. Your review will benefit other faculty considering adoption of open textbooks.
All VCU faculty and instructors are invited to fill out our application form to be added to the stipend wait list or to attend one of the workshops regardless of stipend availability. Preference will be based on availability of open textbooks for review and a desire for wide representation of courses (discipline and level). Parking is available for a fee, on the Monroe Park Campus, in the West Broad Street, West Main Street and West Cary Street parking decks and, on the MCV Campus, in the 8th Street parking deck. For questions, please contact Hillary Miller, VCU Libraries Scholarly Communications Outreach Librarian, at (804) 827-0462 or email@example.com.
