May 15, 2025
Amyri Burton, a graphic design major in the VCU School of the Arts, is the 2025 winner of the Friends of VCU Libraries Design Contest.
She plans to graduate in 2027. “After earning my degree, I plan to pursue a career in package design, specifically creating packaging for children's products. I'm also interested in eventually leveraging my design background to transition into marketing.”
The annual contest is open to all students–full or part-time, undergraduate or graduate level–and alumni of the last five years.
The creator of the winning design receives a $500 prize. Winning artwork will be printed on a T-shirt that will be sold to raise funds for VCU Libraries. In addition, participating artists’ designs will be shared on social media and may be featured on other VCU Libraries’ digital or printed materials. Previous winners 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019.
Judging criteria include:
- Creative execution
- Interpretation of the VCU Libraries as a whole – not just Cabell Library or the Health Sciences Library
- Showcasing and celebrating the diversity of VCU Libraries
- Effectiveness for use on a T-shirt
Burton learned about the contest through an email. “I wasn't planning to enter, but I changed my mind just a few days before the deadline—and I'm really glad I did!”
“I didn't follow a strict process when starting this project. I approached it with the intention of creating something inclusive that represents the VCU Libraries as a whole. I wanted the design to feel welcoming and accessible to everyone who uses the space. “
She is an occasional library user. “I visit the library when I need a change of scenery to focus on an assignment or personal project. I gravitate toward quieter, more private spots near windows so I can work in natural light—it helps keep me motivated and inspired.”
