Ngoc-My Guidarelli is born and bred in Saigon and is French educated. She attended college in France (Université de Nanterre-Paris X, Université de Toulouse-Le-Mirail) where she earned a B.A. and an M.A. in English. Following a teaching internship in London, she pursued an M.A. in American Studies at Pennsylvania State University in Middletown, Pennsylvania through a Rotary Foundation fellowship.

After graduation, Guidarelli served as literacy volunteer coordinator/VISTA worker for the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, Penn. She recruited and trained volunteers to teach English as a Second Language to refugees from Southeast Asia. She also taught French and English as a Second Language at Harrisburg Community College. She returned to her alma mater, Penn State, and worked for four years as a senior clerk in Heindel Library Cataloging Department. As she sought to deepen her knowledge of librarianship, she attended the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh and completed a Master’s in Library Science (MLS). She worked for a brief time as a reference librarian and video cataloger at a public library in Harrisburg, Penn.

She joined the faculty of VCU Libraries in 1993 and has been in a cataloging position ever since.

Diversity, foreign languages and immigration have been topics for her study throughout her academic career. She has nurtured those interests while practicing librarianship, serving on campus committees such as the Fulbright or Boren Fellowship panels, teaching French to undergraduate students, and lecturing on topics as varied as intercultural communications, the Vietnam War or the Vietnamese diaspora using writings in English and French. She has published an article related to authority control of Vietnamese personal names and two book chapters on diversity in librarianship. She is VCU Libraries’ liaison for BIBCO and NACO, which are components of the Library of Congress’ Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC).

Guidarelli has been an active member of the Vietnamese community in Richmond and served on the Board of the Asian American Society of Central Virginia (AASoCV).
