Donna E. Coghill has focused her career in education, instruction and outreach.

She is the liaison to VCU’s Division of Community Engagement, the Division of Strategic Enrollment Management, and Student Success, she also works with high schools and some non-VCU academic researchers in need of access to collections and services. She provides research and teaching services for service learning courses as well as outreach support for Living Learning Programs. She teaches library instruction sessions and supports the research goals of VCU's undergraduates. She is also the liaison to VCU's Honors College and VCU's office of Student Accessibility and Education Opportunity. Additionally, Coghill is co-adviser for the Cabell Library Undergraduate Advisory Committee (CLUAC).

For the university and in the Central Virginia community, Donna has been an active voice for equality, diversity and change. She participated in the development of VCU's diversity plan, served on the VCU Alumni Board of Directors, was chair and charter member of Single Volunteers of Richmond, and was as a member of the Family Lifeline Youth Advisory Board. She is a VCU Green Zone volunteer, a Recovery Ally, a facilitator for the VCU Safe Zone program, a member of Equality VCU, and serves on the VCU Police Department's LGBTQ+ Safety Advisory Group where she co-authored and co-facilitates a Trans Sensitivity in a Policing Context workshop. In 2012, she received VCU’s Burnside Watstein LGBTQ Award, and in 2019 she received the American Library Association’s Newlen-Symons Award for Excellence in Serving the LGBT Community.
