Description
The Workshop is hosting the public testing phase of the Box Stage 2, a portable light stage invented by Ernesto Rodriguez Cruz from the VCU School of the Arts’ Communication Arts Department.
This compact booth uses an array of DSLR cameras and a programmable LED cube to capture detailed 3D models of your face, down to individual pores and fine wrinkles, in under a second.
Step inside, hold still for a moment, and walk away with a high-fidelity digital double of yourself. Professor Cruz and The Workshop staff will be on hand to walk you through the process and answer questions about the technology. During the open house you can also learn about other services and support for 3D scanning available at The Workshop.

The Box Stage is just one of the ways The Workshop supports 3D capture. What else can we offer?
- LiDAR scanning with circulating iPads: Borrow one of our new LiDAR-equipped iPads to scan objects, rooms or people in 3D. Staff will demo how to get started and how to use the scans in your projects.
- EinScan 3D scanner: See our in-house structured-light scanner in action at one of our workstations. This scanner captures detailed models of objects, prototypes and more.
- Consultation and project support: Whether you're working on a thesis, a class project, or a creative experiment The Workshop staff can help you figure out which scanning approach fits your needs.
This event is open to all VCU students, faculty, and staff. No experience necessary just bring your curiosity. Whether you're in the arts, engineering, medicine or just 3D-curious everyone is welcome at The Workshop.
