GIS Day

Description

In celebration of the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and maps and their ability to connect people, regions and systems, VCU Libraries joins with hundreds of organizations around the world to mark GIS Day on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

The Schedule

  • 12:30 p.m.: Speaker and partner set up
  • 12:45 – 1 p.m.: Welcome and opening remarks
  • 1 – 1:30 p.m.:  Keynote Speaker, Ms. Renee Bernstein
  • 1:40 – 2:15 p.m.:  VCU Faculty & Staff lightning talks
  • 2:20 – 3 p.m.:  VCU Student lightning talks
  • 3– 4 p.m.:  Vendor engagement & Digital Poster Session
  • 4 – 5 p.m.:  Refreshments

The Speaker

Alumna Renee Bernstein, a solutions engineer for Esri, has more than 14 years of GIS experience. Esri is an international supplier of geographic information system software, web GIS and geodatabase management applications. The company is headquartered in Redlands, California.

Bernstein graduated from VCU with a degree in environmental and religious studies returning to get her master’s in environmental studies with a focus on environmental technology along with a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems at VCU. She recently finished her Certificate in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness through the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. She joined Esri as a solutions engineer for intelligence agencies and has worked with defense agencies and now works mainly with state and local agencies focused on fire, EMS, emergency management and law enforcement. She also works with federal agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Management Institute and U.S. Fire Administration. She is a member of Esri’s disaster response program.

The event is free and open to all and will be held in person and live streamed through Zoom. Register to attend in person or online.

The in-person location will be James Branch Cabell Library, Room 303, 901 Park Ave., Richmond, Va. 23219. Parking is available for a fee in the West Broad Street, West Main Street and West Cary Street parking decks.
