GIS Day

Description

In celebration of the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and maps and their ability to connect people, regions and systems, VCU Libraries joins with hundreds of organizations around the world to mark GIS Day on Wednesday, Nov. 15,  2023. The event will be live streamed via zoom.

The Schedule

  • 10 - 10:50 a.m.: Join us for an interactive demo showcasing the power of ArcGIS for analysis and Story Mapping
  • 11 - 11:50 a.m.: GIS Career Panel – come with your questions and learn about how to maximize your potential with a career using GIS! Our 2023 Career Panel will be moderated by Eric Johnson, VCU Libraries and our panelists will include:
    • Stuart Blankenship, Data Services Manager, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Division of Soil and Water
    • Jennifer Ciminelli, Assistant Professor, VCU Life Sciences
    • Mark Bittner, Director of Data and Technology, Plan RVA
    • Captain Sehlhorst, Fire Captain, Chesterfield County, Virginia
  • 12 - 2 p.m.: Lunch on your own, then come for the GeOreo bar as you view the map gallery and visit with our vendors
  • 2 - 3:30 p.m.: Featured talks:
    • Chris Broschart, VCU Facilities & Jennifer Ciminelli, VCU Life Sciences: “Leveraging ArcGIS Online to extend the power of collaboration beyond traditional workflow roles“
    • Ben Teresa, associate professor and co-director of the RVA Eviction Lab, Wilder School: “The Geography of Eviction and Housing Instability in Virginia”
    • Captain Sehlhorst, Fire Captain, Chesterfield County, Virginia
    • Nina Brundle, Geospatial Scientist, VCU Rice Rivers Center: “Understanding the Pamunkey River: A Review of Water Science, Management, and Traditional Knowledge”
    • 3:30 – 4:30: Grab some chips and test your knowledge with our GIS Trivia Game to wrap up the day!

The event is free and open to all and will be held in person and live streamed through Zoom. Register to attend in person or online.

The in-person location will be James Branch Cabell Library, Room 303, 901 Park Ave., Richmond, Va. 23219. Parking is available for a fee in the West Broad Street, West Main Street and West Cary Street parking decks.
