Description
Last summer, VCU Libraries launched a Book Artist in Residence program. The selected student received an honorarium along with mentorship from library staff, a workspace and special access to materials in Special Collections and Archives, as well as a budget to create a limited-edition piece of book art inspired by VCU’s outstanding Book Art Collection. The residency was made possible through private financial support.
The exhibition will feature her artist’s book River Monuments, a risograph printed, double sided accordion book, produced as part of her summer residency. Through the use of archival photos from the Special Collections and Archives photo collection and camcorder videos, she invites viewers to consider Richmond’s oldest river (previously called the Powhatan, contemporarily called the James) and its role as a witness and collaborator to the totality of the city’s history, and enshrines these moments like monuments using cut outs within the book.
