Silent floor, no more

June 6, 2014

The fourth floor--the "silent study" floor--is becoming a construction zone. Shelves are being dismantled. Furniture is being moved. The exhibition display cases near the elevators are being emptied. Workers are coming and going via the service elevator.

Much of the study furniture now on the fourth floor is being relocated to the third floor, designated as a "whisper only" floor. Library leadership is considering ways to meet students' needs for silent study areas as construction continues through 2015.

Changes to the fourth floor will provide expanded space for Special Collections and Archives as well as expansive new spaces for quiet study and faculty and graduate study.

Other information:

  • The Mapp Room for Graduate Study will remain open but noise may become a problem for some students.
  • Free earplugs are available at the Information Services Desk on the first floor.
  • The third floor may provide more quiet.
  • Special Collections and Archives on the fourth floor will be closed Friday and Monday, June 20 and 23. Staff in that department will be moving their offices to the third floor to open space for construction.
