Special Collections & Archives open only by appointment

September 18, 2020

Starting Monday, Sept. 21, Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library and Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences will return to serving researchers on-site 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday by appointment only.

The department reopened earlier this month after the COVID closing in March. But walk-in visits have been too low to justify operating on-site desk and page services daily. This decision to offer services by appointment balances staff safety and operational efficiency while meeting the needs of our community. Researcher access by appointment is also consistent with special collections and archives operations at research libraries at UVA, Virginia Tech, George Mason University, William & Mary and Old Dominion University.

Special Collections staff are both working on-site and teleworking and are available to assist researchers by email or phone.
